New Years Tournament Capped By Snow
Jan 8th – Portland, OR
Over the weekend Northwest Water Polo Club took to the road, traveling south to Portland, Oregon to participate in the annual New Years Tournament hosted by T-Hills Water Polo Club. Northwest had four teams participating in the tournament including the clubs 14u coed team, 16u boys, 18u boys and 18u girls. Competition featured clubs from all over Oregon and Washington vying for first in four divisions. All four Northwest teams represented the club well over the weekend, despite playing a shortened schedule due to ice and snow.
Friday afternoon started off with the 18u girls facing off against T-Hills A (Beaverton, OR). The first half was a close affair but behind some great team defense the girls pulled away to earn their first win of the tournament 9-1. In their second game of the day the girls played a great game against Bend (Bend, OR) earning a 6-1 win to finish Friday with a 2-0 record. Following in the girl’s footsteps the 18u boys managed to best Bend 18’s by 13-2. NWPC’s 14u team continued the clubs winning ways on Friday, posting a 10-0 win over T-Hills B.
Saturday morning had the 14’s playing first against a strong T-Hills A team. The 14’s were ready, going up early in the first and holding onto the lead to win the game 8-4. The 16u boys were up next and in their first tournament action the boys were propelled to a 12-2 win over Bend 16’s due to some great teamwork. Unfortunately, due to inclement weather, the remaining Saturday and Sunday games were called off for safety reasons.
Northwest teams will take to the competition pool again the weekend of January 28th, as the 14u and 12u teams take on PSP (Tacoma, WA) and Rain City (Bellevue, WA) in round robin scrimmages while the 18u girls participate in the PSP Women’s Invite.
